Condor II backpack

Maxpedition - The Tactical Bag Originator

Maxpedition backpacks are built for hauling gear and ergonomically designed to never drag you down. Curvaceous, foam-padded double shoulder straps contour to your chest and a sternum suspension belt helps distribute weight evenly throughout your upper body, so you can carry a load without falling behind.

Condor-II Backpack 23L

Designed, Tested and Built to Last

The popular Condor-II Backpack has a medium-sized design, but its surprisingly spacious interior can accommodate over 1350 cubic inches of gear and a 100oz/3L hydration reservoir with b-directional tube port (not included). However, what really makes the Condor II unique is that it's designed with more exterior PALS webbing than any Maxpedition backpack available. Its load-bearing capability can be expanded greatly by using TacTie Attachment Straps to interact with a variety of Maxpedition external pouches, pockets, and accessories.

  • Volume: 1400 cu.in. / 23L
  • Concealed Carry Pocket
  • Hydration Pocket
  • External PALS Webbing for attachments
  • Internal Pockets and loop fields for customization

Worn around the world by a variety of users that have a need for durable packs!

The Condor II hydration backpack (#0512) is the dramatically improved second generation of our military assault daypack that has been upgraded with the amenities of daily use in mind while not compromising the integrity of rugged battlefield construction.

A square with rounded top design, the Condor II can hold over 1950 cu. in. of gear. One removable Y-shaped top strap and four quick-release lateral compression straps secure contents and takes strain off the durable YKK #10 zips. Wide shoulder straps with high breath ability backing provides superb cooling characteristics. As with all Maxpedition backpacks, the Condor-II's loadbearing capacity can be expanded greatly with other MAXPEDITION modular pockets, added to the backpack's front or side PALS attachment points using TacTie. Although we recommend Camelbak hydration reservoirs, our hydration compartment is compatible with most aftermarket hydration systems.

I use this bag everyday. I have added the 2 small pouches on the front which are great for snacks on a hike, or at the airport. Fits under the seat on an airplane. This is my “go to” bag.

Study and well constructed bag. I carry a maxpedition gearslinger daily with the essentials and have been looking for a backpack style go bog that distributes the weight across my entire back and has a little more capacity and functionality. I dumped my old trunk go bag which was a old medium rucksack style bag and put the contents and more in this bag. I just bought a Baja Dry Sack by SealLine 10 bag and it fits fine inside the Condor II with a change of clothes (less pants) and a 6x8 lightweight wool blanket. 2 Mountain house entrees and a breakfeast. Holds my Esbit 3-Piece Cook set and mcnett tactical towel. There is still enough room for 32oz water bottle inside. Outer pockets have duct tape, a field repair kit flint and steel with firestarters in a Altoid tin, 100ft parachord, 2 heavy duty contractor bags rolled, compass, notepad, Isreali bandage, sas survival handbook, playing cards and a Heavy duty thermal blanket (Olive drab on one side - Mylar on the other) in the hydration pouch. The 5.11 6x6 and first aid pouches fit under large compartment zippers on the molle system. They are currently on my gearslinger but can be switched over quickly. Plenty of molle leftover for the Gerber and flashlight pouches on my gearslinger to be moved over as well. I haven't used the straps on the bottom but have been looking for a tarp and sleeping bag pad to put underneath. The interior slit pouch has a contour map of each of the 3 regions i visit most frequently in a ziplock.
The waist belt and chest belt work just fine. They are not designed to transfer the weight, however they are designed to keep the bag from shifting. They do this just fine. The waist belt is high enough that it doesnt hamper my draw capability. I have seen reviews describing the side straps as compression. They are not designed for this. I use the straps to help keep my hatchet handle tight to the bag and unshifting. The other straps keep my folding saw from shifting around on the opposite side. Id say I only have it loaded to ...30 maybe 35lbs. The shoulder strap system isnt designed for 50+lbs nor should it be. You need a frame backback if you want a tent, 3 changes of clothes etc.

I did have to return my first bag because the handle stitching had a flaw in it and created a larger hole the bag material than i expected, I suspected it was just where the stitching machine severed the nylon weave creating a hole. Not major but i exchanged it because i in part wanted to see if it was an abnormality or standard and didn't want the bag to start off with a weak point. Got the next bag from amazon and concluded it was just a abnormality. So much so i have 2 Condors now, foliage and kahki. Well my son has the kahki but im claiming both.

Update - the bottle pouches from maxpedition are expensive but have tog get a bottle holder or something for my nagaline 32oz and metal cup it nests in. Hydration bladders are fine but you cant boil out pathogens is something plastic. The ezbit 3 piece stove does have a cup 16oz. Keep hydration capacity and refilling in mind when outfitting.

My only concern when I purchased the condor II was that it might be too wide, in which case I would get the falcon II. Upon receiving it I was surprised with the size. It is actually smaller than the pictures made it be, which made it the perfect size for me (1.75 m, 80kg).

It may not have a lot of internal organization but it has plenty of room to make up for it and all the MOLLE attachment points all over the extrerior lets you get all the organization you want outside. The main compartment easily fits a 17" laptop, textbooks and notebooks so it works great as a school bag. As it is , I don't it is not big enough to be a BOB (unless you add some pouches) but it is the perfect size to be a day backpack, a get-home-bag, a day hike bag or an overnighter, so it is a really versatile backpack.

All the zippers are covered by a membrane to keep water and dirt out and the zipper never gets caught in it!. Smooth and quick opening in all the compartments. It has a rubberized bottom and webbing to carry a bedroll or a rolled jacket.

It has a lot of webbing all over it: compression straps, adjustment, sternum and waist straps, etc. which means you'll be able to adjust it to the most comfortable position for you but it also means it's going to have a lot of loose webbing dangling around. I wish Maxped included some way to tuck all the webbing but you have to figure out that yourself. Web dominators, elastic loops or velcro tape work fine if you want it to have a 'cleaner' look.

Something I noted about the condor II is that it sits low on your shoulders and high on your back so you have to tinker with the shoulder straps for a bit until you get the right height, otherwise the bottom will pinch your lower back against your pants and belt. Once you get it right, the shoulder and sternum straps distribute the weight so well you barely feel it.
Also, the pictures are a little misleading. They make it look brownish but it actually has a green tint to it. At first I thought I ordered the foliage green by mistake. I would've prefered it to be have more brown to it but it is not a dealbreaker.

All in all, I'm very pleased with it. Perfect size, really comfortable, great durability and so many options for customization.

Update 3/28/13
I've been using the candor for a week now, not long enough to review its durability but long enough to note a couple of minor issues.
First, the handle could use some padding. I don't see it coming off anytime soon, but that thoughness makes it uncomfortable to move it around if you have some weight in the backpack.
The other thing I noticed is that the main compartment has a slip pocket that tends to get in the way. That pocket has plenty of space and it adds to the internal organization of the condor but since the backpack is a top-loader it makes it hard to load. I added some velcro to keep it closed when not in use.

I've had a LOT of backpacks out there including a lot of the big names. I actually started out with Maxpedition with the Condor II when it first came out. I had it for about 5 years through all kinds of rough stuff before I lost it to a burglary at home. After that I decided to try out a few other brands through the years including Spec-Ops T.H.E. Pack, Tactical Tailor fight light, GoRuck GR1, 5.11 24hr, and a few others.

So when I wanted to buy myself a new one for Christmas I went back to the original. The only gripe is they don't have the digital Camo like my first one. It's definitely like coming home again. One thing that surprised me is that I didn't remember the straps being as narrow as they are so it's digging in a touch more than I remember. This isn't to say it's painful but after using my GoRuck for the past 5 years it is definitely noticeable, but at less than half of my go-ruck I'll take it.

Beyond that I almost forgot how much I loved the modularity of the pack while not being too busy. There's just enough organization that it's easy to keep what I need without being overly ladden with hidden nooks and pockets (like the 5.11 products). Nor is it too slimmed down that I need an army of other pouches to keep things organized (like Tactical Tailor or Go-Ruck).

The durability is spot on just like I remembered as well. I can't wait to use it over the next few years.

First and foremost, this is the best backpack I've EVER owned. I've probly gone through one a year for the past 8 year. Always cheap $50 bags or so. I finally caught this one at a good price after watching it for years, and I just had to get it. It is incredibly tough, with a great structural design to it. All the straps are heavy duty and the buckles seem like great quality. It's a bit smaller than I imagined. But I'm glad about that. It's the perfect size for a day pack, get yourself some attachments, and you easily got a 3 day pack. I was real close to taking it on a 7 day backpacking trip, but unfortunately couldn't afford the extra pouches in time. I've been excited to carry this bag as my edc, but also for day hikes.

If you're looking for the toughest, baddest backpack on the planet, look no more.
