High Quality, smooth and quiet pocket knife. AXIS lock is the absolute best!
5 out of 5 stars
High Quality, smooth and quiet pocket knife. AXIS lock is the absolute best!
I am very pleased with this knife which has instantly made me a fan of Benchmade. It still has the nostalgic look and feel of wood, while using modern materials and design.#1: Quality is very high. Opening/closing has a perfect balance between being smooth/quiet while still feeling sturdy (without any side to side blade movement).#2: You can not beat the AXIS lock system for ease of use and safety. AXIS locks are the easiest locking mechanism to use because you use the full griping strength of your thumb and forefinger. You naturally make your hand position perfect to keep your hand safe when opening and closing the knife. The spring loaded AXIS lock is also very addictive to use because if you hold the lock open, it allows the blade to swing freely, but when engaged, the spring adds enough tension to keep the blade in place wherever it is in the 180 degree motion. The AXIS lock also helps you close the knife because as the blade gets close (maybe 1 inch) to being completely closed, the spring pulls the blade back into the handle.#3: CPM-S30V ‘super steel’ stays sharp for a long time and is easy to sharpen when needed. After stripping and fully carving 3 walking sticks, I started to notice a little bit of a difference in sharpness, but I was still able to slice through some small tree branches with one pass. I used a cheap V-shaped manual knife sharpener which made this knife razor-sharp again.#4: I like the feel of the wood/resin hybrid called Dymondwood. The handles are lightly milled, so with the right lighting conditions, you can see the angled lines throughout the handle. However, in a blind ‘feel’ test, I couldn’t tell the difference between real wood and Dymondwood. I added a pic of another knife that has natural G-10 handles so you can see the difference in G-10 versus Dymondwood, you’ll also see the difference between Benchmade’s “stonewash” and Civivi’s “stonewash”, and the grind of the blade is also noticeably different. BTW, if the type of steel is important to you, the other knife is the Civivi Elementum with CPM-S35VN steel versus what's available on Amazon (D2 steel).#5: Benchmade’s product support. Free sharpening service? Where do you get that any where else?Bottom line: Arguably the best high quality knife available under $150.

I've always preferred fixed blades- but, this may be the knife to convert me to a folder fanboy! The action on this folder is excellent. It's an addicting flipper! The diamond wood is very attractive. I bought it to expand the family of my Hidden Canyon, and am not disappointed. I was worried about receiving an "ugly" grain. But, the one I got is pretty nice. I'm very happy with my purchase. Let's break it down:

Blade- very sharp out of the box, nice shape for multiple applications, S30V steel holds an edge well (based on experience with my Hidden Canyon- a little stroping gets the edge super sharp again after a lot of use), the stonewash and brushing is very attractive, I love the two points of friendly gimping on the spine

Action- flips open and closed one handed with ease- you will look like an expert flipper, the axis lock is reliable and keeps fingers out of the way of the blade when flipping closed, gravity does most of the work when closing, action is smooth and consistent (I'm not very experienced with folders, but, I look like a pro opening and closing this knife after a minute or two of practice flipping.)

Handle- wood grain looks good (I got a pretty one), it's comfortable with no hot spots that I can discern, it's gentle on your skin without being slippery, I appreciate the less "threatening" look of the wood grain- this looks more like a tool than a weapon (grandpa would carry this)

OVERALL- This knife is very well crafted and pleasant to look at. It's the exact right size for one handed manipulation without sacrificing functionality as a universal application cutting tool. I have medium size hands and find it's fit just right for a folder. It's ergonomic, well balanced, and feels great in hand. I feel like you just can't go wrong with a Benchmade! I'm VERY impressed by both the Hidden Canyon and North Fork in their Hunter series. Maybe there's a Saddle Mountain in my future?

Even though this knife is for hunting, it's still small and lightweight enough to use it as an EDC knife, which is what I do. It is a bit thicker and heavier than the other knives I carry (mini barrage and mini griptillian) but I don't find it uncomfortable at all. The action on this knife is very smooth and the axis lock is easy to operate. Even though this is a manual knife, you can very easily flick it open with one thumb and deploy the blade nearly as fast as an assisted opening knife. The G10 handles look nice and are smooth to the touch. It's hard to tell in pictures, but the handles do have some texture mainly in the form of horizontal grooves or ridges. It's a bit hard to describe but the grip is very comfortable and also allows the knife to easily be pulled out of your pocket without getting caught on the fabric like sometimes happens with more aggressive grips. The pocket clip is the classic benchmade split arrow clip that allows the knife to be securely fashioned to your pocket without being obtrusive while you hold the knife. The carry position is tip up and the clip can be attached to either side of the handle to allow for ambidextrous carry options.

The blade itself is made of s30v steel which is a premium steel that resists staining better than than the 154cm that is common in many benchmade and higher end knives. The blade came sharp out of the box and has held its edge well thus far (although I have not used this knife too heavily as of this review). Now there are really only two downsides that I see as far as the blade and the knife in general are concerned. 1) the blade has jimping both at the back of the blade where it meets the handle and further up near where there blade comes to a point. In my opinion, the jimping is simply too smooth and subtle to provide any added grip. It more or less provides a different texture to let you know where your thumb/finger is but it doesn't do anything to actually prevent your thumb/finger from slipping. Now as I mentioned earlier, this knife does have good grips so I'm not too concerned with slipping, but it's worth noting that the jimping really isn't functional. 2) the recurve (belly) on the knife is a bit more than is necessary. It's a drop point blade which is a great and functional blade shape, but even if you were using this knife for skinning an animal, it doesn't need to have as much of a belly as it does. I think a bit flatter blade shape would have been a better choice for this knife. All that being said, the two drawbacks are not deal breakers to me and I wouldn't hesitate to buy this knife again.

    Kurzum: absolute Kaufempfehlung!!!

Knife is beautiful. Really good workmanship. Unfortunately it is not "shaving sharp". Of course in every city there is a "knife community" and it is easy to find someone who knows how to sharpen this blade. Also wood colour is different on both sides. On one is like mahogany (rather dark), on another more like oak. Not a tragedy, but for this pice they should mach both sides IMHO. After proper sharpening knife is amazing!! If you hesitate - don't - knife is worth it - but be ready to find someone who knows how to sharpen this blade. The colour mismatch is not a problem for me - as it will be working EDC knife - but if it is a "collection item" it would not be acceptable.
