Atlantic Salt

Other Knives can rust in peace

It's been speculated the sheepfoot shaped blade originated with mariners who found the rounded tip especially beneficial when the knife was accidentally dropped (think working on a ship in pitching seas) as it couldn't stab the foot when hitting the deck. It's also been hypothesized that commanding officers on these ships preferred rambunctious hardworking sailors carry knives without pointed tips, especially while in port blowing off steam after months at sea. Spyderco's Rescue knives are long favored by seafarers and the design has since been embraced by rescue workers, EMT's and ranchers-anyone cutting around flesh in an emergency. The Atlantic Salt is a modified Rescue made with state-of-the-art, ultra-corrosion-resistant H-1 steel. The hollow-ground blade is available in SpyderEdge offering remarkable cutting performance in and around fresh and saltwater.

The molded FRN handle includes a shackle key and is available in black or bright yellow and features a reversible black-coated titanium pocket clip for tip-up carry on either the left or right side. We recommend threading a thong or lanyard cord through the lanyard hole for back-up retention around water, where once dropped, a knife is often irretrievable or lost.

when every piece of crap, is advertised
In times, when every piece of crap, is advertised, as best thing, since the invention of the wheel, I belive that honest, unsolicited user opinion, is worth more then months of ad campaign. You order 'the best thing' and then you received useless, inferior quality piece and when you try to reached the producer, you just find, that customer services is not existing. Therefore, when occasionally, your experiences are compleatlly opposite, those rare occurances deserving an accolade. Here is one of mine:I am commercial diver and one of tools of my trade is a good knife.Long time ago I 've choose Spyderco Atlantic Salt. It stays sharp long time, it doesn't rust, it is yellow and visible in low vis conditions. My preference is a serrated blade.  One disadvantage of that is serrated blade is difficult to sharpen, but Spyderco offers free sharpening for life on  their products. You just have to pay for shipping. This is a second identical knife, I have bought. I have two of those knives clipped to the D-rings of my harness. One on the right side is for the emergencies, one on the left is use at work, cutting material, ropes, tapes etc. Once the left one get dull, I send it for sharpening, when it comes back  sharp like new I rotate my knives. On the project I am right now, I am the foreman, so I stay up top. Because of that, I decided, it is a good time, to send both knifes for sharpening. My old knives were used and abused. The checkering on the handles was almost not existing from abrasion, the blades were never cleaned, stored packed with sand and dirt. Cutting something in no visibility condition, often hitting some hard objects, rock, steel etc. Most of a time the turnaround is 10 to 14 days, so about day 18 I call customer office."Knives are on the way back to you Sir, we are very sorry for an inconvenience." "No problem and thank You"The package arrived two days latter and when I open it there were two brand new Spyderco Atlantic Salt knives and a letter of apology. That is a customer service fa beyond my expectations.Spyderco You got a customer for life.

I have a few Spyderco knives, and this is becoming one of my favorites.

The blade is somewhat longer than many, but it doesn't feel big or heavy in your hand. The nylon/fiberglass handle is well suited for use in the water as it doesn't get slippery when wet the way many other materials do. I find the handle on the small side, which is a bonus if you have smaller hands or want something you can operate underwater with one hand.

The knife opens easily with a single hand, although I found it took a while to break in - it was a bit stiff when new.

The steel blade is indeed quite sharp and holds an edge well without the need for frequent sharpening. It's serrated and I've managed to saw through relatively thick wood and vines with no trouble at all. Best of all, as they say, it is impervious to salt water and has shown zero tendency to rust or oxidize in any way. A few times, I had it immersed in salt water for several hours, and with just a quick rinse in fresh water, it's good as new. Furthermore, I've had various chemicals, petro products, alcohols on it, and it's been completely resistant to any sort of staining.

Definitely among the best in this size and shape...if you need one, this is a great product that's worth the price.

This is the BEST folding marine knife I have ever used. Period. Does not rust, anywhere, after exposure to salt water.
Perfect for marine and diving operations.

    Mounting:
For those who want to attach a bolt snap or clip, the hole in the pocket clip bolt is large enough to accommodate a couple passes of cave line [braided nylon #24/#36] to tie on anything you please. It is also [barely] big enough for a single pass of 550 paracord, if you're persistent. If you remove the pocket clip bolt [and thus, the pocket clip], the hole is MUCH larger and easier to work with.

The pocket clip works fine up to 2" nylon webbing [often used in diving harnesses] and is perfect at 1.5-1.75" [rigging belts] but I wouldn't obviously rely on that for serious diving operations outside of a warm-water vacation. Tie a snap instead, and/or clip it inside your drysuit or BCD pocket! For surface work, the pocket clip is very stiff and springy, so it will be very secure on your board shorts/etc.

    Useful bits:
The blade has an under-center action for the first 20* of opening. Meaning that, if something snags the blade and pops it open a bit, the bade will snap closed instead of staying where it is.
The tip is blunted, and therefore much safer to use for rescue, extraction, and environments that are constantly moving and slippery.
The molding of the grip is very good with wet hands.
There are no inserts for the grip, but under normal use [not prying] I don't notice ANY flex. Pushing sideways with this knife, there is minor flex, but that is far outside the use of this knife that it is not a concern for me.

    Sharpening:
Just send it to Spyderco every off-season. It's a few bucks. Comes back perfect.
I sharpen all my plain blades, and have a serration kit should I have to do this one, but Spyderco does a far better job.

USE FOR: crewing on board any boat or dive work. Surfing. Keeping clipped to your life vest. Kayaking. Cutting lines, webbing, fishing line, etc. I already have two dedicated dive knives on my rig, but can take this in a pinch should the need arise.

NOT FOR: EDC, unless you literally live on a boat. The blade doesn't handle fine work well. At all. IF you choke wayyyy up on the blade, you can use just the last serration for fine cutting, but guess what, it's still a jagged finish!
This is okay, because when at sea I only carry to save lives. Fine blades and tools stay in the toolkit.

For EDC, around water, I would recommend the plain-edge version of this knife, as long as you are aware that it has a semi-pointed tip which makes it iffy for rescue, and often won't cut some of the new-age lines [Dyneema and Spectra] in one panicked swipe [the serrated version will].

I bought this knife specifically for a scuba trip in the Gulf of Mexico. It made it through a two tank dive, and 4 days of beach swimming, without so much as a speck of rust. Not just the blade, the whole knife... clip, pivot screws, locking bar... everything. I tried, too. It was NEVER rinsed with fresh water (there's still sand in it now, actually, a month later), and after the dives it was left in my dive bag for a few days.

Anyways, that shouldn't be a surprise, since Spyderco flat out say that this knife will not rust, and they're not a company known for lying to their customers. The knife itself is a good design for a rescue knife, or a boating knife. I find myself carrying it when I'm going for multi-hour motorcycle tours into the middle of nowhere, or when I go to the lake it's always there with me. I found it perfectly suited for scuba diving. It stayed secure in my BC's waist belt, and the one time I used it underwater it was very easy to handle, with no risk of accidentally puncturing my BC.

Would be a good option for a first responder, perfect for cutting seat belts, clothes, dense cloth, etc. all without the risk of accidental puncture wounds. Would also be a good option for boat knife, as there is a lower risk of drop-related injuries, and it excels at cutting rope. However, this is not a good EDC knife, and I do not carry it on a regular basis. It is a specialized tool for specific jobs, and it seems to excel at those jobs.

So far, edge retention has been rather good. I sharpen it on a Sharpmaker, and it gets sharp enough to push-cut receipt paper, then stays that way for a good while. I would put it on par with VG-10.
