Product Description

Product Description

The BY22 Byrd folder has a Hawkbill-shaped blade. This distinctive curved cutting tool's claw-like tip overwhelms material in its cutting path. As the hook pulls what is being cut against and in contact with the sharpened edge, the hook winds around material stopping it from sliding off the tip. The Hawkbill blade's shape is rooted in the commercial fishing industry, its profile ideal for downward, sweeping cutting performed at arm's length directed away from the body. Full serrations across the blade's length measurably increase its cutting capacity for separating webbing, cardboard and coarse or fibrous material. The hollow-ground blade features jimping at both spine and choil for additional tactile dexterity and control over the cutting edge. Its black fiberglass handle is Bi-Directionally Textured for slip-resistance in any hand position with an ambidextrous tip/up, tip/down steel pocket clip. Nested inside the handle are full length skeletonized steel liners, increasing rigidity and strength without adding bulk or weight. Screw-together handle construction allows for adjustment and a lanyard hole located at the handle's edge accommodates secondary retention through attachment of a lanyard or thong.

Amazon.com

This appropriately-named folding knife, from innovative cutlery company Spyderco, has a hawkbill-shaped blade with a distinctive, claw-like tip. Based on knives used in commercial fishing, the blade's unique shape is ideal for downward, sweeping cutting performed at arm's length, and directed away from the body. Serrations across the entire cutting surface improve the blade's ability to slice through webbing and other fibrous material, and the hollow-ground blade offers jimping along the spine and choil for improved control.

A black fiberglass is handle has a proprietary Bi-Directional Textured finish for nonslip precision, and nested inside are full-length, skeletonized steel liners, which increase rigidity and strength while keeping weight to a minimum. Screw-together construction is both durable and easy to clean and maintain. A four-way steel pocket clip and lanyard hole offer any number of carrying configurations.

A Great Tactical Knife

A Great Tactical Knife
Disclaimer: I am a LEO and have a slight obsession with knives. This one is the current one that I have equipped on my gear.Profile:It has a slim profile with a ribbed grip that’s enough to keep it from sliding out of your hand wet, but won’t wear a hole in your pants pocket from having it clipped inside. The blade has a tear shaped thumb grove cut out it to assist in opening the blade. It is not as easy to open as if it had the usual notch but still doable with some practice.Opening and Collapsing:This blade has no spring assistance while opening the blade and only a slight spring assistance in the last half of collapsing the blade. While some would say this is a negative I rather prefer it. While opening/collapsing there is a distinct tension that makes me feel I have greater control of the blade and keeps it from feeling flimsy. Unlocking button on the spine works like a charm. The Blade:Once locked open, it is locked. Very sturdy. No jiggle in the blade whatsoever. The blade shipped sharped and I have confidence in both everyday use and emergencies.Overall, a solid knife for the price. I’ll probably buy second.

My first Byrd knife I received was a gift from my girlfriend who did purchase it here through Amazon. I returned it to Spyderco for warranty immediately because when it closed, it was touching the liner and handle with the blade. Spyderco sent a return package with a new replacement. Since then, my impressions of this dandy knife are as follows:

PROS:

-BLADE:Decent working blade made out of 8Cr13MoV just shy of 3 inches so it should be legal for most owners with length restrictions. The Byrd serrations and curved hawkbill blade shape makes for a true hard working knife that can handle anything I put before it. A little stropping on leather will allow the edge to be honed and really shine. (I put only reasonable expectations mind you, not prying nails out of wood and cutting through tires)Keep it oiled once in a while and it should not rust with normal use.

-WEIGHT:FRN handles with skeletonized liners keep the weight down for superb EDC at only 2.5 ounces. I placed a paracord lanyard on mine that sticks out of my pocket because I tend to forget it is there.

-HANDLE:The handle is ambidextrous with a four way positionable clip which allows personal carry preference. The ergonomics on the handle are beautiful. They allow both a comfortable standard grip, and with the jimped choil on the underside of the blade, it allows the owner to choke up on the handle to handle more delicate tasks. The ability to choke up on a hawkbill styled blade is unique to Byrd because Spyderco does not do this on their hawkbills. This knife looks a little funny with the bi-directional slanted oval texturing but in my honest opinion, it bites well in the hand where you need it to without discomfort and I will go on to say it is better than Spyderco's version.

-PRICE: The cost of this knife is very reasonable and should allow any user or collector to be able to afford one. Great job Byrd.

CONS:

-FIT AND FINISH: Don't expect a beautifully machined product. This knife is rough and the metal frame and handles show it. If it really bothers you, it is nothing a little bit of fine grit sandpaper can't cure. Remember, this is a work knife and it excels in that role.

-MODEL NAME DIFFERENCES: The only thing that is confusing with this product is the little oval on the handle that states the name of the model of the knife. Some say HAWKBILL 2,HAWKBILL without a number 2, and other versions that read MEADOWLARK 2. Mine says HAWKBILL only. It just seems like the company is confused where to go with something minor.

-PRODUCTION: In order for the costs to stay low, the knife is produced in China which may be hard for some to accept, but the reality is that many of our products are. I recommend this knife for what it does, not for where it came from. In addition, it does not try to copy the namesake of another person or company's design. If you are looking for a nice strong yet lightweight hawkbill, look no further. It's here, it's now, it's awesome.

Although this is a Spyderco, I somewhat expected budget quality at the budget price point for the imported product. That was NOT the case. This is a surprisingly nice quality knife, albeit it's an import.

The handle doesn't have the smooth, rounded profile of the US-made models I've ordered, and it has plain oval bumps instead of the textured directional bumps of the American Spyderco, but the handle is easily and securely grasped. I like the "lip" on the handle edges as it makes it even more secure in my fingers than the smooth-edged models.

The blade was nicely centered, smooth in operation and had a clean edge profile. The lock is strong and crisp when it locks and has a strong spring tension. The unique tear drop shaped opening hole is quite comfortable and easy to use. I surprisingly like it better than the traditional Spyderco hole because it allows more of my thumb's edge to engage in the hole. More and better jimping on the handle and blade's choil and spine than my older "original" model Delica with the fully serrated GIN steel blade.

The clip is cleanly polished and smooth.

Now, if the heat treat is up to the same QC as the American Spyderco folders, even this low cost steel ought to make for a great bargain knife. This seems well worth the price point, and then some. Don't be fooled by the low price. It doesn't have the fancy steel or thick handles of the more expensive Spyderco knives, but this is a very handy budget offering.

This is what you need to have in your hand when ropes or straps need to be cut in order to save lives. I haven't found anything in a car or truck that can't be easily cut by the serrations on this blade including electrical wire. The best thing about this blade is that it holds an edge forever. I can tell when it's time to sharpen it, but it still cuts down to bone with just a little more effort than normal. I use a bench grinder with a 6 inch leather wheel and some rubbing compound and in a few minutes it's back to being a razor blade. I recommend that everyone keep one of these knives in your vehicle because you never know when you might need it. There's nothing worse than watching someone get hurt or killed when you can't get them out of a mangled car because their seat belt has them trapped. Do yourself a favor and buy this knife because someday the life you save might just be your own.

Of course I'd love to have the Spyderco Byrd, all 440 grade stainless steel and made in Japan but one must sometimes compromise in life. This is a well made knife for those who don't quite need the (admittedly better) stainless Spyderco version made in Japan.

This item does not say Spyderco anywhere on it but I'll assume by the listing description that Spyderco somehow has a relationship with Byrd. It is rather made in China from a cheaper steel. That said, it is well made and I would trust it in a knife fight with a mortal enemy if I needed to and is something I can't rule out might happen because you never know what happens in life.

This is a well-made knife at a reasonable price, especially if you're looking for a "ripper" type knife.

It's a well-made knife and perfect for my ripping needs, mostly tough envelopes and packages.
