Kershaw Hinderer Knives

Signature to a classic Hinderer design, Rick Hinderer uses a lockbar stabilizer in many of his designs. Hinderer claims fame over his Hinderer-style filler tabs among many other technologies and collaborations in Kershaw’s knife lines. Famous for the Kershaw Cryo, Hinderer designs unique and powerful knives built tough and built to last.

Hinderer Features

Attractive Blade Finish

Kershaw’s Blackwash finish derives from a balanced blend of blade coating and stonewashing. Together the two produce a precisely formulated all-black matte finish impervious to fingerprints, smudges and marring. And, even though the knife itself is brand new, Blackwash projects a well-worn, vintage look popular for blending comfortably with clothes and gear during everyday use and carry.

Fast Deployment

Using a torsion bar to move the blade out of the handle, Kershaw’s revolutionary SpeedSafe Assisted Opening system enables smooth, secure, fast one-handed blade deployment. Apply manual pressure to the flipper or thumb stud with a light push or pull back to overcome resistance of the torsion bar, and the blade opens smoothly and locks into place for confident handling without premature closure.

Secure Locking System

Kershaw’s frame lock design makes knives safer, securer, sturdier and quicker for one-handed blade deployment. The knife handle, or frame, has two metal plates on either side of the blade, and when open, the lockbar butts up against the blade’s backend to prevent blade closure. To close the knife blade, push the frame to the side to unlock the blade and fold the blade back into the handle.

Additional Features

knife flipper, flip open, flip open knifes, switchblade knives, assisted opening knives, switchblade

One-Handed Flipper

Knives with SpeedSafe open have two options for one-handed blade deployment. To activate the smooth, instant open, user can push a thumbstud or press a flipper. The flipper on SpeedSafe assisted knives is easy to operate by both left- and right-handed users. And, once blade swings open and locks into place, flipper either disappears for aesthetics or remains visible for added finger protection.

Durable Handle

A reinforced polymer of thin strands of carbon tightly woven, carbon fiber is tremendously strong yet lightweight. Strong weaves of bonded carbon atoms are used to compose carbon fiber in both Kershaw high-end knife handles and Zero Tolerance premium materials. With solid strength, wear resistance and corrosion resistance, carbon fiber is an excellent, high-performing, high-quality knife handle. Stainless steel contains chromium to equip knife handles to withstand rusting and provide corrosion resistance. Stainless steel offers durability and is often used in combination with another material to make for an easier grip. Offering excellent durability, stainless steel knife handles often incorporate etching, patterns, ridges or lines for a less slippery grip.

Convenient Pocketclip

Kershaw designs pocketclips to fit specific knives according to their weight, intended end use, size, style and hardware. Some knives have multiple carry options, others are more streamlined. The 4-position pocketclip allows tip-up or tip-down carry on both the right and left sides, providing users the most versatility. Proper use of the pocketclip promotes safety and efficiency while using knife.

Product Description

Premium-built and designed by Zero Tolerance in collaboration with custom knifemaker, Rick Hinderer, the 0566CF folding pocket knife is skillfully crafted in the USA, has an open construction design, is equipped with steel tube spacers and is an excellent everyday carry. Constructed with a high-performing, ultra-premium CPM-S35VN steel blade with a rugged, scuffed stonewashed finish, the blade offers exceptional edge retention, enhanced cutting capability and outstanding corrosion and wear resistance. The lightweight, textured handle features a comfortable, ergonomic grip with its stonewashed titanium back scale and black carbon fiber front scale with sweeping lines. SpeedSafe assisted opening enables smooth, one-handed blade deployment, while a secure frame lock prevents blade closure. As a signature feature to a classic Hinderer design, the titanium lockbar stabilization acts as a travel stop to avoid the accidental over travel of the lock bar when closing this ideal EDC, the 0566CF.

I had my eyes on this one for a while and when the price dropped on the carbon fiber scale version, I jumped on it.Unlike its big brother ZT0550 or 0560, this one is not too big, not too heavy, and none too thick.Older release had Elmax steel; thank goodness this newer version is in S35VN steel. It is still bit porky at 5.25 oz but the overall size and weight is still quite manageable for a hard use EDC knife.Lockup is solid with no blade play; it has phosphor bronze washers instead of ball bearing ones, giving it deliberate but smooth opening and closing actions.Carbon fiber is smooth but not too slick and is through and through CF, not a laminate over G10.My only complaint is the Kershaw assist opening mechanism.I would have preferred this knife to be a manual flipper.

This is the only knife I’ve ever owned that I have nothing to complain about. I love the ergonomics. It fits great in the hand. The spring is strong, which makes opening the blade very satisfying and reliable. The pocket clip can be moved to four different places to accommodate left or right hand tip up or tip down carry. Clip itself let’s the knife sit nice and low in the pocket. The lock is secure and easy to manipulate. It is slim enough not to be burdensome in your pocket, and is big enough to get significant jobs done while still being easily within the realm of an EDC knife. But the best part is the blade steel. It sharpens beautifully and easily and holds a razor edge for a long time. And it looks great. Just an extra little perk.

I’ve carried this knife for almost two years. I’ve taken it on training exercises, field events, overseas, hunting, sailing, I even took it diving once. Except for the coating on the pocket clip, it looks new. I was cautious when I bought it because I thought I might not want to use a $150 knife to do every day dirty work, but it has handled all the abuse I’ve thrown its way easily. It’s worth it.

    UPDATE

After I posted my review, I read some of the others. As far as the steel issue of Elmax vs S35VN, I couldn’t care less about the name. If you can honestly tell me you used the knife and weren’t impressed with the steel, that’s fine, but I doubt that’s what happened.

As far as the hard opening... I don’t know what to tell you guys. I’m guessing people are not pulling straight down on the flipper. Maybe they’re trying to actually push it straight in. I can’t really imagine it being an issue.

Just my two cents. No one cares, but I had to defend my knife.

This is a Great EDC Knife. The box says it all, Overbuilt In The USA! If this isn't the perfect EDC then it should be. The size is perfect for a pocket carry knife. The Carbon Fiber handle is very nice looking. I think it really gives the knife a quality look to it that sets it apart. The knife came packaged in a box with bubble wrap to protect it, like it could be damaged. This knife looks and feels like it will last a lifetime, or until you lose it, which may be the only drawback to carrying it. If I lost it I would be sick. A lot has already been stated about the opening process, and I would have to echo that it is a little stiff out of the box. It will break in pretty quickly and speed up, because you won't quit playing with it. If it doesn't, you can always loosen the pivot screw. The pocket clip allows it to set deep in your pocket. It has a good weight to it if you don't mind a nice heft to your knife. It definately isn't a flimsy little thing. I like it the way it is, it just feels and looks like quality. Go ahead make a statement, that you can have the nicer things and are not afraid to get what you already know you want.

The ZT 0556CF arrived hair poppingly sharp. As sharp as any of my Busse or Benchmade knives. The fit and finish are first rate. The CF bolster is perfectly mated to the bolster and the steel lockbar has an understated matte sheen. Blade opening is very easy using the flipper feature. I suspect that reviewers here who have had trouble opening the knife are trying to use the blade stops like thumb studs on a Benchmade. Though they look similar they have different functions and trying to open a ZT with the blade stops is very difficult. My only criticism is that you have to read very closely to observe that ZT builds this knife with a steel lockbar instead of their usual titanium. In spite of this difference the knife is not overly heavy and would be very comfortable for EDC. Grip and jimping are executed very well as is the locking mechanism. Recommended without reservation.

It is a frame lock and was almost impossible to close.
I have other ZT knives that work fine.
This one was obviously one that slipped by inspection. Otherwise it was very sharp and well made, but a little pricey. If you’re going to demand a high price, then make sure all knives are 100% inspected.

This is a great all-around knife. The design is impeccable, the quality of materials is ideal and the weight of it all remind you that this is a worthy investment. I have no regrets in buying this knife whatsoever. It's a little smaller than the 0562CF model, but not noticeably so. I own them both.

As others have commented this particular knife can be somewhat stiff to operate straight out of the box. I did not encounter the same issue with the 0562CF. I'm hoping the torsion bar will loosen up as it is somewhat hard to get open and a little stiff to close. However, it flicks open lightning-fast once the assisted opening feature kicks in. Had it not been for this stiffness, this knife would have received a 5 star rating.

Note, as of early 2017, ZT switched the steel to S35VN. These are no longer Elmax. Not the biggest difference in the world in every day use but a hige difference in the value of the knife

Reviewed in Germany on April 21, 2019
