Kershaw Cryo Knives

A Rick Hinderer knife, the Cryo series of knives are results of a collaboration between Hinderer and the designers of Kershaw. Skillfully crafted and beautifully designed, the Cryo is built of pure stainless steel coated in titanium carbo-nitride for a no-fuss, no frills, sleek knife. The Cryo is designed with EMTs, police officers and first responders in mind. A sturdy knife that is aesthetically pleasing and feels great in the hand, the Cryo offers users a secure blade lockup using a tough frame lock and SpeedSafe Assisted Opening accessed using either a flipper or thumbstud.

High-Performance Steel

A budget friendly, reliable, top-of-the-line Chinese produced steel, 8Cr13MoV steel has carbon and slightly less nickel for hardness and edge retention. Kershaw’s precision heat treated 8Cr13MoV steel strongly takes and holds an edge and offers wear resistance that can withstand damage from both abrasive and adhesive wear. 8Cr13MoV is a value blade steel featuring high performing characteristics.

Attractive Blade Finish and Coating

Kershaw’s patented Blackwash finish derives from a balanced blend of blade coating and stonewashing. Together the two produce a precisely formulated all-black matte finish impervious to fingerprints, smudges and marring. And, even though the knife itself is brand new, Blackwash projects a well-worn, vintage look popular for blending comfortably with clothes and gear during everyday use and carry.

Black oxide coating is a chemical bath, or conversion coating, that converts the surface of the blade steel to magnetite. Mainly for appearance, black oxide does add some mild corrosion resistance and tends to minimize light reflection from the blade. The blackening process gives the blade an attractive, smooth, tactical, fierce black surface that is very desirable to knife owners.

Fast Deployment

Using a torsion bar to move the blade out of the handle, Kershaw’s revolutionary SpeedSafe Assisted Opening system enables smooth, secure, fast one-handed blade deployment. Apply manual pressure to the flipper or thumb stud with a light push or pull back to overcome resistance of the torsion bar, and the blade opens smoothly and locks into place for confident handling without premature closure.

Secure Locking System

Kershaw’s frame lock design makes knives safer, securer, sturdier and quicker for one-handed blade deployment. The knife handle, or frame, has two metal plates on either side of the blade, and when open, the lockbar butts up against the blade’s backend to prevent blade closure. To close the knife blade, push the frame to the side to unlock the blade and fold the blade back into the handle.

Additional Features

knife flipper, flip open, flip open knifes, switchblade knives, assisted opening knives, switchblade

One-Handed Flipper

Knives with SpeedSafe open have two options for one-handed blade deployment. To activate the smooth, instant open, user can push a thumbstud or press a flipper. The flipper on SpeedSafe assisted knives is easy to operate by both left- and right-handed users. And, once blade swings open and locks into place, flipper either disappears for aesthetics or remains visible for added finger protection.

Durable Handle

Stainless steel contains chromium to equip knife handles to withstand rusting and provide corrosion resistance. Stainless steel offers durability and is often used in combination with another material to make for an easier grip. Offering excellent durability, stainless steel knife handles often incorporate etching, patterns, ridges or lines for a less slippery grip.

Convenient Pocketclip

Kershaw designs pocketclips to fit specific knives according to their weight, intended end use, size, style and hardware. Some knives have multiple carry options, others are more streamlined. The 4-position pocketclip allows tip-up or tip-down carry on both the right and left sides, providing users the most versatility. Proper use of the pocketclip promotes safety and efficiency while using knife.

Product Description

Designed in collaboration by custom knifemaker, Rick Hinderer, and skillfully crafted by Kershaw, the Cryo II is one of Kershaw's best sellers constructed twenty percent larger than the original award-winning Cryo. Equipped with pure, all-steel 410 handles and a durable 8Cr13MoV stainless steel drop point blade, the Cryo II keeps its sharp edge, is corrosion resistant and is ideal for tactical use, rescues or EDC. The matte grey titanium carbo-nitride finish gives the blade and handle surface a desirable vintage, already broken-in appearance and helps to hide additional scratches. assisted opening allows for quick, easy, one-handed blade deployment with a manual push on the thumbstud or pull back on the flipper. The four-position deep carry pocketclip provides any user the opportunity to carry the Cryo II tip-up, tip-down and comfortably low in pockets. Signature to a Hinderer design, the tough frame lock with lockbar stabilizer provides secure blade lock during use.

Nice knife; this thing is SLICK! No, really...
My original Cryo was absconded by TSA because I mistakenly hadn't checked it. After years without, I decided I wanted it back and Amazon had the Cryo XL Blackwash for less than the original finish- looks better for less. What's not to like? Well...It arrived and it is, indeed, a bigger knife; it feels heavier by a lot but after weighing my current Kershaw (not sure what model now), this is only 2oz heavier than that one, which is not a lot, but it's amazing the difference 2 ounces make. Still, I like this knife and size, doesn't feel too heavy in the pocket, and has more surface to get a better grip, H O W E V E R . . .It is a more substantial knife and THE BLACKWASH MAKES THIS THING REALLY SLIPPERY, as in, it could slip in your hand and gore you, kind of slippery. SKETCHY would not be inaccurate. The blade came crazy sharp, making this thing even more terrifying to handle because, have I mentioned, this is slippery!! I struggled for a week or two then settled on these solutions that may help you:1. DO NOT BUY THE BLACKWASH FINISH. This will solve ALL of the safety issues. Period. While it looks great, the Blackwash finish will only serve to contrast with the blood dripping profusely from the now missing tip of your finger and exposed bone. Upside? How many of your friends can count to 9 1/4? You'll be the life of the party at the next kegger. MURICA!!!!2. GRIND IT.That broken in look you dread applying on your new knife may be the thing that saves you a trip to the ER, and your hand from looking like Frankenstein. Not making this up.I took my bench grinder to this thing. As you can see in the pics, the edges are different-looking because I spooled the grinder up to a good speed, turned it off, then touched the edges to the knife gently in a grind, grind, grind, type of contact, rather than a long grrrrrrrind along the edge. The slowing speed is meant to add abrasiveness to make it rougher without taking too much metal off. It works. No, low grit sandpaper doesn't work because the metal is so hard. (did you honestly think I hadn't tried that first? Come on!) I used a Dremel on the gimping since it's so DAMN slippery everywhere. The gimping had to be sharper so I could get some purchase on this thing and not carry a tourniquet. That worked, too! Oh, the flipper tab, that's freaking slick so there's no grip to flip the blade out and your finger will slip off. (Yes, it will) Roughed that with the Dremel but will probably end up cutting notches like I did with my previous knife to keep my index finger from slipping off.3. GET A GRIP. Use Dragon Grips Grip Tape https://a.co/d/9mVP9X1Not only does this stuff work really well, it supports a family business, and it is TOUGH AS NAILS.There's a small, adjustable, lip inside of the tray you load X-ray imaging detectors into on a wall stand. Like the Blackwash Cryo XL, this ~ 2" long, and approx 5/8" wide lip is untextured stainless steel and the only thing keeping the $50K detector from meeting the floor. I've had others slip, but was able to catch them, but immediately broke into a sweat because I was nearly "that guy" who damaged the detector; terrifying! After we invested in this new detector, I put some of this Dragon Grip on the lip and now the detectors are far more secure. Despite the untold number of times every day detectors are taken in and out and rubbing on this lip, the Grip shows hardly any signs of wear and has been on for at least 5 months. STELLAR STUFF!!Because the scales on this knife are SO slick, I had a hard time pulling the knife off the edge of my pocket. As you can see in the pics, I added the Grip to the one side and BAM! No issue pulling it out!! Also worthy of noting here is the fact that the adhesive is so good, none of the Grip has moved from the original placement on the scale, despite the expected temperature and movement inside of a pocket.Hope this review helps to keep your new purchase from becoming knife and death😜!! (see what I did there)*** Just so we're all clear, I don't know the people who make Dragon Grip Grips from Adam, so I'm not getting anything by sharing about their product, to be sure. Still, I want to mention one more thing about the Dragon Grips. NONE of the Grip I strategically placed on the bottom of my laptop to prevent slipping and drops while moving it one handed after a Rotator Cuff surgery, has moved in the least- it's been 2 years and they are all as I placed them. Removal is easy and if you heat it a little (VERY little) with a hair dryer, removal is clean painless. Honestly this stuff is the best and good for a wide variety of uses. There are VERY FEW products I can drone on about, but I am ever thankful I found their product. I can still count to 10. 😁
