Kershaw Leek Knives

One of the most popular of Kershaw knife series, the Leek, has a slim, versatile, modified drop-point blade with good slicing capabilities. The high performing blade steels sharpen to a razor edge and hold the edge for a extended use. The three-inch blade is perfect for most tasks and the slim tip allows the knife to excel at piercing and detail work. SpeedSafe Assisted Opening allows for easy blade deployment with the use of a simple pull back on the ambidextrous flipper. The variety of colors are fade-resistant, scratch-resistant and permanently bonded to the anodized aluminum handle.

American custom and premier knifemaker and designer, Ken Onion, invented and pioneered the SpeedSafe Assisted Opening mechanism for many of Kershaw’s top-selling knives. The youngest ever inductee into the Blade Magazine’s Hall of Fame, Onion creates award winning and innovative knives and technologies available to knife enthusiasts, collectors and everyday knife users.

High-Performance Steel

Sandvik 14C28N steel is a high-performance steel with increased nitrogen in the formula for excellent corrosion resistance and hardness. The overall highest performing knife steel in the world that still maintains the productivity benefit of being fine-blankable, 14C28N steel is ideal for knife applications which place high demands on edge sharpness, edge stability and corrosion resistance.

Attractive Blade Coating

Kershaw’s Bead-Blasted finish enhances a knife’s aesthetics and complements its end-use. The high-tech finish is achieved by applying a mixture of fine media onto the blade’s steel under high pressure, creating a smooth, non-reflective matte surface. Fine media includes glass and aluminum oxide beads that allow color variation and optimal performance results for an overall stunning effect.

Fast Deployment

Using a torsion bar to move the blade out of the handle, Kershaw’s revolutionary SpeedSafe Assisted Opening system enables smooth, secure, fast one-handed blade deployment. Apply manual pressure to the flipper or thumb stud with a light push or pull back to overcome resistance of the torsion bar, and the blade opens smoothly and locks into place for confident handling without premature closure.

Convenient Pocketclip

Kershaw designs pocketclips to fit specific knives according to their weight, intended end use, size, style and hardware. Some knives have multiple carry options, others are more streamlined. The reversible pocketclip allows user to choose to carry knife tip-up or tip-down or to choose on which side knife carries. The user may select either a preferred tip position or a preferred carry side.

Additional Features

knife flippers, flip open, flip open knifes, switchblade knives, assisted opening knives

durable handles, knife handles, handle features, knife handle types

locking system, knife locking, locking knives, kershaw locking, secure locking

One-Handed Flipper

Knives with SpeedSafe open have two options for one-handed blade deployment. To activate the smooth, instant open, user can push a thumbstud or press a flipper. The flipper on SpeedSafe assisted knives is easy to operate by both left- and right-handed users. And, once blade swings open and locks into place, flipper either disappears for aesthetics or remains visible for added finger protection.

Durable Handle

Stainless steel contains chromium to equip knife handles to withstand rusting and provide corrosion resistance. Stainless steel offers durability and is often used in combination with another material to make for an easier grip. Offering excellent durability, stainless steel knife handles often incorporate etching, patterns, ridges or lines for a less slippery grip.

Secure Locking System

Kershaw’s frame lock design makes knives safer, securer, sturdier and quicker for one-handed blade deployment. The knife handle, or frame, has two metal plates on either side of the blade, and when open, the lockbar butts up against the blade’s backend to prevent blade closure. To close the knife blade, push the frame to the side to unlock the blade and fold the blade back into the handle. Designed to keep the blade inside the handle, the Kershaw Tip Lock system is featured on all Leek and Scallion SpeedSafe knives. This simple slider, when engaged, ensures the blade will not prematurely open if not in use. The Tip Lock system is located where the tip of the blade meets the handle scales in the closed position. A press of the thumb activates the Tip Lock for secure, safe knife use.

In the photos you can see the Kershaw leek compared to my previous EDC, the SOG Twitch II. I have carried the SOG for 3 years, I absolutely love it, but I decided to look around and see if there were any knives out there that might compete for my pocket. I have looked into the leek for years but hadn’t purchased one until now.So far I really like this knife. It is affordable, the quality and durability seem good so far, and it is RAZOR sharp, it will slice anything. I tested it by slicing through sheets of paper and it made a smooth cut with no tearing. I also easily shaved some hair off my arm. The blade lock is a nice safety feature, so I don’t have to worry about it opening up in my pocket. It opens easily, and very, very quickly. The finish is beautiful. Some reviews mentioned that they had rust show up on their new knife, something I fortunately have not yet encountered. I put a light coat of oil on my knife to give it some protection, just in case.Over all I am very pleased with the Kershaw Leek. If after a few months I am still using the Leek as my EDC, and it’s still in good shape, I plan to buy a black one with a half serrated blade. If I run into any issues I will update this review.

Only had this knife a few days so this is just a cursory review I will add things later as needed.

First, I guess that either I got one that wasn't exactly sharpened like everyone elses or maybe my definition of "insanely sharp" is much different than everyone elses.
Mine came in the box I would say at best "somewhat sharp" or "utility Sharp" it wasn't dull by any means but not even remotely scary sharp, hair popping sharp, and all the other degrees of sharpness extolled in all these reviews.
No biggy, I will sharpen it soon.

It feels nice in the hand, although for me personally a bit on the small side which is fine because I bought this for my wife which has small hands.
It does feel good though, feels well made, slight bit of heft to it for its size.
The blade looks nice, has a great shape.
Opening is super easy and smooth, flick the index opening with a little extra flick of the wrist and BAM, its there instantly as if by magic can't even see it open.
Closing it is "slightly" more difficult than a non assisted opening knife but still easily done with just a few minutes of practice.

It is very thin, has a great clip so you do not even feel it in your pocket, goes in and out of pocket very easily, can reach for it, pull it out and have blade open easily within 2 seconds.

I bought this as I stated for my wife mainly for her to EDC when she goes out walking the dog without me sometimes.
For her, with her hand size, she is only 5.2 with tiny hands this should be about the perfect size for self defense.
I think I am going to name it "Sting"
3" long blade that I WILL sharpen to hair whittling razor sharpness with this blade shape, very pointy will easily put a severe hurting on any attacker not armed, one or two cuts in the right places and they will not being doing anything but trying not to bleed to death.

All in all very pleased so far, it is clearly a well made knife and has a lifetime warrantee from a company that by all accounts is very good to deal with and its well under $50.
Probably be the best knife made for that price.

Let me not "bury the lead here. The Kersaw Ken Onion Leek is the perfect everyday carry knife (EDC) for me. I own three different models and would have had five if I hadn't left one out on my desk at work and forgotten to remove the other from my car before I had it washed at Stickyfingers-R-Us car wash down the street. I believe that in both cases, the person picked it up and fell in love instantly. The Leek, I believe can turn even a good man bad and I attribute this to the way it looks and feels .

I find it fits my hand perfectly and the SpeedSafe assisted opening feature is easy, fast and reliable. This knife is also easy and safe to close. That said, I sit with it while watching TV or listening to music, it opening and closing and changing positions for several days so I am able to use it unconsciously with either hand in just about any situation. Yes, so it's all about muscle memory. I've done this with every knife I own.

At least one reviewer has suggested the leek is perfect for small hands and it is. But it is also perfect for my big hands for the tasks I require of my "always in my pocket knife". Whether that's picking out a splinter, cutting open a plastic package, carving branches when I grafting fruit trees (I sterilize it first of course and keep one just for that) ... or any number of other tasks I encounter daily. This thing is out and in use at least twice a day and sometimes double digits. Once it kept me from getting robbed after picking up a prescription someone wanted. The authoritative snap and the glint of the polished blade caused this fellow to turn and run. I should note that some models do not have a polished blade.

I own many knives and most of them were potential candidates for my perfect EDC. It took me 10 long years and a sizable investment to "find" the Leek. I'm grateful to the man who showed me the knife for the first time a few weeks after it was introduced.

Along the way there were many others I purchased for specific purposes. For example, I have one that I use just to cut and test the fruit in my orchard ... a Zenport KC05 Fruit Sampling Knife. One, a special limited run Buck folder designed for the CHP, is on my visor in case I need to cut seat belts or crack a window. Buck was a client of mine for many years and I traded knives for work and own at least 50 still. (at one time I had nearly 100) My first Buck Folding Hunter stays with my camping equipment and will until I pass it on to a nephew or my protege. I learned a great deal about knives while on site at Buck HQ before they left San Diego for Idaho. That coupled with having spent many hours with designers and makers and in the field using and abusing them sometimes has left me with some very definite opinions about the various options we have for functional, reliable and handy EDC's . That said, this is my opinion and anyone that tells you "this is best EDC" is full of themselves and chicken pucky. Our needs, our hands, our preferences all differ and you need to really need to put some effort forward to find what's right for you.

What I think you really may want to consider is the fact that many serious knife guys I know and stay in touch with (from soldiers, cops and contractors to outdoorsmen and office jockeys) also are on record as thinking and saying, the Ken Onion Leek is the best EDC ... for me. Add this, if a guy doesn't like the Leek, there a good chance it's because he prefers another of Ken Onion's knives that are larger or meaner or smaller or sexier. The rest? Well they are wealthy "connoisseurs" that are essentially addicted to knives and generally own and carry really excellent, limited edition or custom knives that cost 5-20 times more money. Since I sometimes "lose" a knife, I can't see carrying a work or art. Not even if I won the lottery. at $40-80 the Leek has the perfect balance of price and performance. And as others here have pointed out: IT IS SHARP! Out of the box sharp. And if you know how to use a good sharpener, it's relatively easy to keep it that way.

It does have a few funk issues that stem from design elements geared to reduce the weight. Lint and debris can collect in around the blade walk and in the groove. That's not unusual for folders that are kept in your pocket. Compressed air is your friend there. Also necessary is some good 3-in-1 oil, along with a good sharpener (I use the Ultra-Tek) and Torx drivers, numbers 6 and 8 so you can disassemble and clean your knife periodically. Also, bear in mind it can take days or weeks before the SpeedSafe hits full stride. You need to work it to loosen it up.

So if you're shopping for a good pocket knife for somebody and need a safe, albeit "blind" recommendation, here it is. You almost can't go wrong with this knife ... especially since Amazon is so cool about returns. If however you are like me and have been on a quest for the perfect EDC, this may well be what you're looking for.

And finally, there are some complaints that the knife handles are "slippery". To that I say if your knife is slipping in use, you may not be letting IT do the work or you let the blade get dull. If you must have an EDC with an uber-textured covers, move on. For me this knife cuts most everything so effortlessly I feel like a surgeon!

There is no perfect knife. They're no different than any other tool. You need the right tool for the job, but this one surely checks a lot of boxes.
First of all, the knife is very well made from excellent materials. This fact alone nearly warrants the rating. But also, it is easy to open and close, and easy to carry around in your pocket. The blade came from the box sharper than I will ever need and there is VERY little flex in the hinge. The clip works great even though I rarely use it. I just stick it in my pocket.
The blade, as mentioned, is very sharp and useful for the various things most people use a pocket knife for. Wood, paper, plastic, etc. But, it is a fairly thin blade. If you tend to use your knife for a screw driver or pry bar often, you may want to choose something else. This blade, while seemingly tough for what it is, is thinner. I would not pry too much with this knife as I think it would be fairly easy to break. (compared to a heavier knife of comparable steel)
The blade lock (for when closed) has no detents or other method of keeping it where you put it. I have learned that it may be locked or unlocked when I take it out of my pocket, regardless of how it was when I put it there. This is not a huge deal, as I can't see the blade opening for no reason. It's just something to know.
The assist action is very, very good and super easy to get used to using. The design is simple, so it should stay that way for a long, long time.
Overall, if you are a "normal" user of a pocket knife, this one makes for a good one, and it's made well enough, it may be your last one!
